For most of the ordinary slopes, a section of a contour bund is computed as if it lies on a level surface. For trapezoidal sections, half the sum of base and top width multiplied by the height would cive the section area which would be correct for all practical purposes. When, however, the slope of the land is appreciable, the slope factor will have to be taken into consideration for the computation of the sections. Again, on a slope, the height measured will have to be specified as to where it has been measured, as it will be different if it is measured at the middle, at the uphill point of the topwidth or at the downhill point. For the discussion in the following pages, the height will be measured at the middle of the topwidth. In this paper, generalised expressions have been obtained with different variables involved so that the additional factors for the earthwork computa- tions for working cn a hillside can be readily taken into account. A common practice adopted in many parts of the country is to use the contour bunding as a step towards the ultimate levelling of the fields into a series of benches.
