A plant growing out of place is known as weed. The losses from the weeds have been calculated by several research workers, who have indicated that the losses varies from 5 to 80%. The author has seen may fields especiaIly in paddy areas in years of deficient rainfull that sometimes due to the lack of labourers, the proper weeding of the field is not done and the farmer has to leave the fields and the whole paddy field is either grazed by the animals or cut and fed to the cattle. Under these circumstances, chemical methods of weed control can solve the problem to a considerable extent. Weeds compete with the crop plants for space, moisture, light and nutrients and if they are not removed from the fields losses in yield are bound to occur.
