Improvement in the Nitrogen Status of Soil by Phosphate manuring of Legumes in Sandy Loam Soils of Nadia District

Abstract
The new alluvial soils of sandy loam texture of Nadia district are very poor in nutrients and are not capable of growing good crop even with adequate fertilizers. Use of green manuring is not always economical in Indian condition. (Mukherjee and Agarwal 1950, Pause et al. 1965 and Singh 1963). At the same time the poor cultivators can not afford to pay for fertilizers always. However, the farmers can adjust crop rotation in such a way that it might improve soil nutrient contents particularly the nitrogen, (Khare 6.1 Rai 968, Alexander 1961) by growing leguminous crop in sequence. Keeping this in mind an experiment was conducted with eight legumes mainly of Rabi (Winter) season which could provide grains and also build up some fertility for the succeeding crop and in the present paper the details of the work have been reported.
