Effect of Green-Manuring on Succeeding Crop Paddy T-9 and Uptake of Nitrogen at Different Stages of plant Growth
20
Abstract
The ploughing under of green crops for the purpose of maintaining the fertility of soil is almost as old as history itself. Green-manures may also function as cover) crops, in so far as they take up soluble plant nutrients and prevent it from being lost in the drainage water. Besides this, green-manures, especially those with long roots, tend to carry food up from the subsoil, and when the crop is turned under this material is deposited with in the root zone of the succeeding crop (Nagina. 1953-54). It the green-manure is a leguminous crop and no dule organisms are active, then nitrogen content of the soil is augmented.
