Abstract
Irrigation development has been the lynchpin of Indian agricultural planning over the last four decades. The irrigated segment of Indian farm sector has grown substantially. Today, nearly two-thirds of our crop. output originates from this segment. Therefore, performance of this segment, especially in terms of growth and stability, is a vital determinant of the overall progress of the whole agricultural sector. Some salient trends in irrigation are examined in what follows. At the same time, why some desirable new tendencies or technologies like the use of water saving appliances are not picking up momentum is briefly com- mented upon.
