Abstract

India has about 7500 sq. kms. length coastal line. Its continental shelf covers an areas of about 4,50,000 sq. kms. Exclusively economic zone extends up to 317 nautical kms. With our limited land resources Indian Coastal Region can not be over emphasised (Sahai 1985). Roughly about 25% of the population resource leave in coastal areas within 100 kms. of the coastal areas form a highly complex and dynamic ecosystem, sensitive to developmental pressures. The resources utilisation and development put impact of eco-degradation and vagaries which lead to the reduction of developmental potential in the coastal region. Degradation of valuable land and derive waste, industries, degradation of valuable coastal vegetation are only a few examples which warrants for a proper management and conservation of the coastal zone.
