Abstract

The positive role of integrated watershed development programmes in reducing erosion and enhancing productivity were hitherto being studied through Benefit Cost Ratio analysis and Internal Rate of Return. Lack of bench mark data pose a serious constraint in evaluating the watershed development programmes. To overcome this, an optimization approach has been suggested through Linear Programming (LP). The LP model envisages minimization of treatment cost. It incorporates a linear sediment yield model as one of the constrains which help in quantifying the requirement of financial resources to be deployed for bringing down the sediment load of the watersheds to a desired level. The model was applied in a watershed of Damodar catchment in the Upper Damodar Valley area.
