The objective of this investigation was to study the efficacy of the phytorid sewage treatment plant in chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from domestic sewage at Agriculture College Maharajbag, Nagpur during the year 2017-2018and to determine the optimum condition using the response surface methodology. A Box- Behnken model has been employed as an experimental design. The effect of three independent variables namely hydraulic loading i.e. flow (50-150 m3 d-1), dilution (10-80%) and spatial length (16-100%) has been studied on the COD removal from the sewage in bench mode of the experiment. The optimal conditions of the COD removal were found to be flow100 m3 d-1, dilution: 27.29% and spatial length 16%. Under these experimental conditions, the experimental COD removal obtained was 130 mg L-1. The proposed model equation using the Response Surface Methodology has shown good agreement with the experimental data, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 98.71%. The result showed that optimized conditions could be used for the efficient removal of the COD from domestic sewage.
