POTATO VARIETIES AND CROPPING SYSTEMS IN INDIA
349 / 5986
Abstract
The need for assured food security to theever increasing population and shrinking availability of arable land has necessitated temporal and spatial intensification of cropping. Short duration cash crop of potato, which is highly amenable to adjustment, fits in well in various cropping systems. The potato in India is presently grown over 1.28 million ha under diversified agro-climatic conditions (Fig. 1). Nearly 80% of the crop is confined tothe Indo-Gangetic plains. Diversity in Indian potato varieties for attributes like adaptability, maturity, quality of produce and tolerance to biotic and abiotic factors makes it ideal for inclusion in wide range of cropping systems in different agro-climatic conditions.Downloads
