Scientists are now-a-days prefer to use biofertilizers over chemical fertilizers because of their non-toxic and organic matter content. Dark septate endophytes (DSE) fungi exhibit positive effects on plant growth and nutrient uptake of host plants. Aloe barbadensis Mill. is one of the most important medicinal plants considered worldwide. Their leaves contain some important secondary metabolites like Aloin and Aloe emodin which possesses great importance in pharmaceutical industries for their medicinal properties. Thus, considering the beneficial role of DSE fungi and the growing demands of biofertilizers for sustainable agriculture, our present study was carried out during 2021-2023 at the Department of Botany, The University of Burdwan, West Bengal to isolate and characterize the DSE fungi from the roots of Aloe barbadensis Mill. After isolation, four DSE fungi were selected based on the production of clear halo zone and considered for their plant growth promoting traits. The molecular identification of the two best fungal strains was done by 18s r-DNA sequencing and were identified as Fusarium sp. and Aspergillus proliferans. Four experimental sets were prepared to study the effects of these fungal strains on the morphological growth of the plants as well as the Aloin and Aloe-emodin content in the leaves. After application of these fungal strains to the plant, significant augmentation in morphological growth and also enhanced Aloin and Aloe emodin content in treated leaves were noticed compared to the untreated control set, and thus these fungal strains might be considered as a potent biofertilizer in the near future.
