Abstract

A study was conducted during dry season of 1995, wet seasons of 1995 and 1996 at Cuttack and New Delhi to
identify improved source of wide compatibility gene and sterility gene(s) in inter-sub specific crosses (indica x japonica) of rice COryza sativa L.) Although attempts were made to develop 28 inter-subspecific crosses and four reciprocal crosses involving four japonicas as female and seven indicas as male parents, progenies of 26 cross combinations and three reciprocals were finally evaluated for spikelet (female) and pollen (male) fertility. 'JD-8' has been identified as new improved source of wide compatibility gene. Association of high pollen fertility with high spikelet sterility in all crosses has been explained in the light of expression of spikelet of sterility gene(s) in materials utilized. Possible
involvement of cytoplasmic genome in the expression of spikelet sterility was ruled out since there was no significant
difference in the spikelet fertility between 3 crosses and their reciprocals.
