A field experiment was carried out at Students instructional farm of the Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad (W) during winter season (rabi) 2001-2002. Application of fluchloralin, pendimethalin, metolachlor each @ 1.0,1.5 and 2.0 kg/ha did not affect the germination (%) in chickpea. In general various characters, viz branchestplant, dry weight1 plant and number of nodules and their dry weighttplant were affected significantly at all the doses (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg/ha) of herbicides tested. FPuchloralin applied at 1.0 kg/ha gave growth promotary effect and significantly increased branched plant, dry weighttplant, nodules/plant and dry weight of the nodules. All these herbicides applied at 1.5 kglha or 2.0 kg/ ha produced inhibitory effect an number of branchestplant, dry weightiplant and number of nodules, their dry weight1 piant and reduced these growth parameters either significantly or produced the results at par with untreated check. All of these herbicides reduced leaf arealplant at all the doses except fluchloralin which produced growth promoting effect on leaf area at the dose of 1.0 kg/ha.
