The study was undertaken to find out the nature and magnitude of gene effects of fruit weight and number of fruitstplant in chilli. Generation mean analysis revealed the presence of epistasis and higher magnitude of dominance effects than that of additive effects for both the traits in all the crosses except 'PBC 830' x 'Pb Lal' for fruit weight. The dominance ( I t ) and dominance x dominance ( I ) components has opposite sign in almost all the crosses which indicated the presence of duplicate type of epistasis. Hence this will reduce the net gain occurring from heterozygosity due to cancellation of dominance and epistatic effects. Such situation is not very conducive for exploitation in the form of F, hybrids. Hence, it can be concluded that fruit weight and fruit/plant in chilli are controlled by both additive and non-additive gene effects but additive effects has more influence on their inheritance, so selection can be used for improving these traits.
