Efficacy and economics of integrated pest management against insect pests and diseases of olitorius jute (Corchorus olitorius) in eastern Uttar Pradesh and diseases of olitorius jute (Corchorus olitorius) in eastern Uttar Pradesh

The field experiments have been conducted on 'JRO-524' olitorius jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) to find out most effective integrated pest management practices against diseases and insect pests during crop seasons 2003-04,2004-05 and 2005-06 at Bahraich. The integrated pest management treatments were combinations of 2 weed managements, viz post-emergence application of quizalofop ethyl 5 EC @ 0.2%, followed by 1,2 hand weedings, 2 bioagents against diseases, viz soil application of Trichodernra viride @ 2.5 kg/ha, seed treatment of T. viride @ 4 g/kg seed and 2 bioagents against insect pests, viz spraying of neem oil @ 2.0%, spraying of Beauveria bassiana @ lo6-' spore suspension1 ml. The pooled data of the 3 seasons indicated that the IPM treatment comprising 2 hand weedings, followed by seed treatment with T. viride @ 4 gkg seed and spraying of Beauveria bassiana @ 106-s8p ore suspension/ ml or followed by soil application of T. viride @ 2.5 kg/ha and spraying of neem oil @ 2.0% gave average fibre yield of 2.88 and 2.76 tonnes/ha respectively were significantly superior to farmers' practice (2.06 tonnes/ha) and untreated control (1.79 tonnest ha). The average incidence of semilooper, stem weevil, ash weevil and yellow mite as well as stem rot and root rot diseases in these treatments were significantly low in comparison to farmers' practice and untreated control. The marginal benefit: cost ratio for these IPM treatments were 1.92 and 1.62 over untreated control and 1.58,1.28 over farmers' practice respectively.
