The caeca of 36 broiler chickens of different age showed villi of different shapes, size lined by simple columnar epithelium. The epithelium height of caecal tonsil was comparatively more as compared to body and blind end. The number of goblet cells was comparatively more in body and blind end than the caecal tonsil. A few endocrine cells were observed in all the parts of the caecum and increased with the advancement of age. This epithelium towards the base of the villi facing the fossulae was modified in to the follicle associated epithelium
where a few cells similar to M-cells were observed. The intestinal glands were drastically reduced in caecal tonsil area however; these glands were comparatively more in body and blind end of the caecum. The distribution of
mucopolysaccharides was same as in the surface goblet cells. The lymphoid tissue was comparatively more in the lamina propria and the tunica submucosa of the caecal tonsil and increased with the advancement of the age. The tunica muscularis and the serosa were well developed.
