Abstract

The present study was conducted on ampullary glands of six buffaloes. The histomorphological observations showed that the ampulla was lined by folded lamina epithelialis, propria submucosa, tunica muscularis and adventitia layers. The tunica mucosa was highly folded and was lined by simple columnar type of epithelium. The propria submucosa contained abundance of ampullary glands along with connective tissues fibres. These glands were simple branched tubular and tubuloacinar type lined by cuboidal to columnar epithelium. The glandular units were of different shape and sizes. These glands were expanded to fill the lumen of ampulla and there was no duct system seen in the ampulla. The tunica muscularis was consisted of inner cicular and outer longitudinal layers. The histochemical results indicated that the fine granular reaction of PAS in the cytoplasm of glandular epithelium and secretory blebs in the apical region. The basement membrane of glandular and surface epithelium, and muscularis layers showed moderate to strong PAS positive reaction. The other layers of ampulla showed weak to moderate PAS reaction. The present observations depicted that the ampullary glands were well developed and had secretory activity in buffalo.
