Abstract

The present study was conducted on the thyroid gland of adult sheep and goat (12 each) collected from local meat shop immediately after slaughtering and stored in liquid nitrogen. These tissues were subjected to cryostat sectioning at -20°C. The sections of 10-12 µm thickness were cut and incubated in different substrates for demonstration of various enzymes. Weak to moderate activity of AKPase and G-6-Pase was seen in follicular epithelium of sheep and goat. G-6-Pase activity was weak to moderate but strong AKPase activity was found in blood vessels of both the species. SDH and LDH activity was strong in follicular cells of sheep and goat. Capsule, trabeculae, interfollicular connective tissue and colloid showed negligible to weak SDH and LDH activity in both the species. Moderate SDH activity was seen in blood vessels. Follicular and parafollicular cells showed strong NADH and NADPH activity in sheep and goat. Capsule, trabeculae and interfollicular connective tissue showed negligible to weak NADH and NADPH activity. The activity of G-6-PD was strong in follicular cells and moderate in parafollicular cells, capsule and parenchyma of thyroid gland in sheep and goat. The activity of all the enzymes was more in peripheral follicles in both the species which confirmed that these follicles were active.
