Abstract

Present study was conducted on the apparently healthy buffalo kidneys (20 left and 20 right) to elucidate the gross anatomy viz., anatomical location, gross appearance, shape, weight, volume, length, width, circumference and thickness. The kidneys of buffalo were situated in sub-lumbar region and surrounded by large amount of perirenal fat which acts as a cushion. Kidneys of buffalo were reddish brown in color and superficially lobulated. The mean weight, volume, length and number of lobes of right kidney of buffalo were 479.815±16.047 gram, 482.90±16.11 ml, 17.27±0.364 cm and 31.85±1.60 respectively. For the left kidney these parameters were 473.785±15.295 gram, 477.40 ±15.49 ml, 16.79 ±0.311 cm and 31.40±1.65 respectively. The circumference at cranial end of right kidney was more than the circumference of left kidney. The width of right kidney at cranial end was more than the left kidney and width of right kidney at middle was more than the left kidney. The thickness of left kidney at middle and caudal region was more than the thickness of right kidney.
