Abstract

The present study was conducted on 24 foeti of Kosali cattle to elucidate the gross morphometrical development of omasum. Kosali is the newly registered native cattle breed of Chhattisgarh, India, mostly reared in village on agricultural residues. The foeti were categorized into four groups on the basis of CRL with six foeti in each group i.e. Group I (below 20 cm CRL), Group II (Above 20 cm up to 40 cm CRL), Group III (Above 40 cm up to 60 cm CRL) and group IV (Above 60 cm CRL). The shape of the omasum varied from spherical, oval to bean shaped. Topography of the omasum varied between 7th to 13th rib on the right side of median plane. Omasum was directed obliquely downward and backward in all groups. In group I, omasum was larger than abomasum. Among all recorded parameters maximum increase was recorded in volume of omasum. Internal surface of omasum resembled as a book with open leaves due to presence of omasal laminae. In group I, only three order laminae were present. Fourth order shortest laminae were noticed from group II and present followed to every taller laminae and sequence was A, D, C, D, B, D, C, D in 13 to 14 sets. Laminae were smooth in group I and II, papillae appeared in group III onwards. The height of tallest laminae was nearly eight to ten times more than smallest laminae.
