Abstract

Comparative histological study on the oviduct of developing and laying hens revealed pseudostratified
ciliated columnar epithelium in entire portion of oviduct except funnel part of the infundibulum, which was
simple columnar. The mucosal folds of the developing hens differed from those of laying hens. Lamina propria
was comparatively thicker in laying hens than developing hens. The tubular glands of laying hens were more
developed but less in number than developing hens. In most of the regions there was clear demarcation of inner
circular and outer longitudinal muscle fibres. These muscles fibres were spirally oriented which were interlacing
each other in between the bundles of circular muscle fibres. The serosa was comparatively thicker in laying hen.
