Abstract

The present study was conducted on left and right ovaries of 100 adult buffaloes during different seasons. The whole ovary was cut serially at a thickness of 10 µ. Every 20th section was stained with haematoxylin and eosin stain and the number of pre-antral (primordial and primary) follicles in an ovary was counted. The
primordial follicles had flattened pre-granulosa cells that became cuboidal and divided during follicular activation which was an index of activation. The average number of primordial and primary follicles was significantly (p < 0.05) higher during winter and autumn as compared to other seasons. The number of follicles was more in right ovary as compared to left, though the difference was insignificant.
