Abstract

The gall bladder is present in man, cattle, sheep, dog, cat, mice, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds (Kamel and Nawar, 1975). It is absent in elephant, horse, deer, rat and pigeon (Tarkhan, 1960). It was also not reported in camel (Gross man, 1960; and Smuts and Bezuidenhout, 1987). Hence the gall bladder is known to have
the function of altering the composition of the bile as the result of absorptive and secretory activity, yet little attention appear to have been paid to the ultra-structure of this organ. Local breed of buffalo calf (Bubalus bubalis) has been selected due to the scarcity of the available information on the histology of gall bladder and that too, of the animals living in the arid and semi-arid region. Present study has been planned to justify the functional versatility of mucosa of gall bladder.
