Abstract

Low levels of mineral nutrients may directly influence flowering and fruit development but there are only a few cases where this has been clearly demonstrated. While there are many commercial nutrient supplements that claim direct effects on cropping and fruit quality, these claims are seldom backed up with convincing evidence. Thus it is probably more instructive to consider the effect that most nutrients have on fruiting as being indirect. In other words, a tree growing in a soil adequately supplied with nutrients will have a plentiful supply of healthy leaves which will photosynthesize sufficient carbohydrates to produce high quality fruits.
