Abstract

Sarpgandha or chota chand (Rauvolfia serpentina) is a native of India. It is known after the name of a German botanist and physician, Leonard Rauwolfia. Plant is a perennial under-shrub, widely distributed in India in the sub- Himalayan tracts up to 1,000 m as well as lower ranges of the Eastern and Western Ghats and in the Andaman. This herb is believed to have been used in Indian system of medicine for about 4,000 years. Its roots are valued in India and Malayan peninsula as an antidote for the bites of poisonous reptiles and insects, since ancient times. Realizing its importance as a remedy for a large number of ailments and diseases, and its limited production, and high demand, the NMPB has supported several projects for its cultivation and conservation.
