Abstract

Onion is one of the most important vegetable crops grown in India having both food and medicinal value, and widely cultivated for internal consumption as well as for export. India, being major onion-producing country, produces 20.13 million tonnes from 1.19 million ha, with a very low productivity of 16.24 tonnes/ha. Onions are used as spices, condiments and vegetables almost daily in every kitchen as a seasoning for wide varieties of dishes. The green leaves, immature and mature bulbs are eaten raw as well as used in preparation of vegetables. Because of its special characteristics of pungency, it has more value than other vegetables. Onion is grown in three seasons i.e. kharif, late kharif and rabi in many parts of the country. It is very perishable crop and it cannot be stored for long time due to its perishable nature. It has very good export potential and demand of onion is increasing day-by-day for export as well as for internal consumption of the country.
