Native ornamental bamboos of Western Ghats
164 / 56
Abstract
The Western Ghats of India is a refuge for many plant species, including bamboos. Among the 16 natural species occurring here, some can be tamed for gardening. Growing native bamboos in homesteads, public gardens or in agroforestry systems satiates its conservation and moreover remediates raw material shortage. Five selected ornamental species, Ochlandra wightii, O. beddomei, Munrochloa ritchiei, Teinostachyum wightii and Dendrocalamus stoksii are described here. Being monocarpic perennials, offsets are suitable for propagating the species.Downloads
