Evaluation of Quality of Irrigation Water in Coastal Gir Somnath District of Saurashtra Region in Gujarat

Ground water quality survey was carried out to categorize underground irrigation waters of Gir Somnath district of Gujarat for their irrigation suitability. A total of 180 water samples were collected from six taluk as during May, 2014. In general, underground well/tube well water was slightly neutral to alkaline in reaction. The overall pH value ranged from 7.03 to 8.60 with mean value of 7.71. The water was saline in nature and overall EC values ranged from 1.15 to 12.39 with mean value of 3.31 dS m-1. The overall concentration of Ca++, Mg++, Na+ and K+ varied from 1.0 to 45.7, 1.1 to 22.9, 7.59 to 66.80 and 0.00 to 0.94 me L-1, respectively. The concentration of CO3- -, HCO3-, Cl - and SO4- were in the ranged of 0.0 to 1.6, 2.5 to 15.2, 4.4 to 114.1 and 0.01 to 3.31 me L-1, respectively. Study revealed that 37.8 and 62.2 per cent samples were under C3 and C4 classes of EC, 92.2, 7.2 and 0.6 per cent samples were found under safe, marginal and unsafe classes of RSC, 31.7 and 68.3 per cent samples were found safe and unsafe classes of SSP and 7.25, 42.8, 37.8 and 12.2 per cent samples fall underS1, S2, S3 and S4 classes of SAR, respectively.
