Abstract

The present study aimed to know the spectrosopic and chemical characters of humic substance of humic substance extracted from farmyard manure (FYM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of humic substances shows major functional groups through different peaks. The FTIR spectrum of humic substance showed bands at 2931 cm-1 (aliphatic C-H stretch), 1581 cm-1 (C=C and C=O of carbonyl), 1431 cm-1 (aliphatic C-H, COO- or OH deformation of COOH), 983 cm-1 (COO-, C-O stretch) and 424 cm-1. Humic substance extracted from FYM recorded an elemental composition of C (37.1%), H (8.88%), N (2.82%), S (0.49%) and O (50.7%). E4/E6 ratio was 6.23 and was neutral in reaction (pH 6.58) and electrical conductivity was normal (0.46 dS m-1). The total phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium contents of humic substance extracted from the FYM was 0.09, 0.41, 0.28, 0.25%, respectively.
