Appropriateness of Recommended Dose of Fertilisers (RDFs): A Critical Appraisal through Long Term Fertiliser Experiment Findings
32 / 0
Abstract
In India, crop-specific Recommended Doses of Fertilisers (RDFs) have traditionally guided farmers’ nutrient management practices, often with minor adjustments based on soil test results with medium fertility equating to the general recommended dose. Adjustment is done for low or high fertility rating classes by raising or decreasing the RDF to an extent of 25-50 percent of the general recommendation respectively. The soil test methods used for the purpose are organic carbon by Walkley Black Method (Jackson 1967) or alkaline KMnO4 method for available nitrogen(N) (Subbiah and Asija 1956), Olsen’s method for available phosphorous (P) for neutral to alkaline soils (Olsen et al. 1954) , Bray’s method for acidic soils (Bray and Kurtz 1945) and neutral normal ammonium acetate method for available potassium(K) (Jackson 1967).
