Abstract

Soil organic matter is a very important component of soil, actively involved in the operation of biogeochemical cycles, particularly of carbon, spanning over lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Thus, characterization of the nature and functions of soil organic matter is very important. Recently a new branch of research is emerging out and that is on energetics of soil organic matter. It is organic matter which actually fuels the life of soil or one of the drivers of carbon cycle, i.e., soil microorganisms. Soil is an open system and always associated with fluxes of energy and mass. Thus, it is thermodynamics which can be well applied to explain the energy transformation occurring as a result of decomposition /transformation of soil organic matter.
