Phytic acid being the chelator of minerals/ions may cause problem during brewing in malt barley and for bioavailability of minerals in feed and food barley. A set of 71 Indian barley genotypes were evaluated to get preliminary information on grain phytic acid content and its correlation with other grain parameters. The phytic acid content varied from 0.676% to 1.997 % showing a good variability available. Three varieties with lowest phytic acid content were NDB 1173, BH 393 and BCU 73, while the three genotypes with highest phytic acid were HBL 276, Dolma and HBL 113. A positive correlation was obtained between phytic acid content and percentage of thin grains.
