To study the genetic analysis for heat tolerance, eight heat tolerant
durum wheat genotypes viz., HI 8498, HI 8627, HI 8691, WH 896 IWP
5013, NIDW 295, RAJ 6566 and MACS 3125 were crossed in halfdiallel
fashion; and parents and 28 hybrids were grown in randomized
complete block design (RCBD) under very late sown condition i.e.,
25th of December. Significant differences were observed among parents
and hybrids. General combining ability (GCA) effects were highly
significant for all the traits as compared to specific combining ability
(SCA). HI 8498, HI 8691 and NIDW 295 were found to be the best
parents as well as combiners due to their high GCA and SCA effect,
respectively for 1000 grain weight (GW) and grain yield/plant (Gy/p).
Cross combinations HI 8498/ NIDW 295, HI 8498/ MACS 3125, HI
8627/ HI 8691, HI 8691/ WH 896, HI 8691/ RAJ 6566, IWP 5013/ NIDW
295, IWP 5013/ RAJ 6566, NIDW 295/ RAJ 6566 and NIDW 295/ MACS
3125 showed favourable SCA effect for grain yield alongwith other
traits. Therefore, these crosses should be given more emphasis in the
development of desirable heat tolerant high yielding progenies in
future durum wheat breeding programs.
