Groundwater is the most important natural resource in arid and semiarid areas. Ground water quality assessment is essential to maintain the soil and crop productivity to higher level without damaging the soil health. Groundwater samples collected from wells and borewells across Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh were analyzed for physico-chemical properties and chemical properties and subsequently calculated the water quality indices such as SAR and RSC. The pH and EC of groundwater varied in the range of 6.8- 8.4 and 0.5 -24.0 dS m-1, respectively. The abundance of cations and anions were in the order of Na+> Mg2+> Ca2+>K+ and Cl-> HCO3-> SO42-, respectively. The SAR of groundwater varied from 0.11 to 43.12 with a mean of 6.34 and RSC from -79.2 to 11.0 with a mean value of -2.79. Out of 225 groundwater samples, 79.6% samples were in excellent category for irrigation (<10 SAR) and 12.9% (10-18 SAR) samples are good for irrigation. Based on the RSC, about 74.7%of water samples were in safe category while 19.1% samples are not suitable for irrigation. Correlation matrix indicated that EC is strongly correlated with Cl-, SO42-, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+.
