Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2015 to study the effect of soil applied boron on depth wise (0-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-90 and 90-120 cm) distribution of root biomass of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in a calcareous soil at Regional Research Station, PAU, Bathinda. The experiment consisted of two sources of boron (B) viz. borax and granubor and six levels of soil applied boron viz. 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mg B kg-1 of soil. The experiment was laid out in RBD factorial design with 3 replications. The results revealed that the mean root biomass at different depth increased significantly at 1.0 mg B kg-1 treatment level as compared to control. Highest mean root biomass was recorded in surface soil (0-15 cm) whereas lowest at 90-120 cm soil depth. Available boron content in soil increased significantly at all levels of soil applied boron over control. Highest available boron content was recorded in surface soil (0-15 cm) whereas lowest at 90-120 cm soil depth. A positive and linear relationship between available soil boron and root biomass was recorded at respective depth. Among sources, efficiency of borax and granubor was found to be equal and affected the above discussed parameters non-significantly.
