Abstract

In present study, the quality of groundwater for irrigation in Balesar tehsil of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan was examined. Geo-referenced 31 water samples of tube well/open well were collected from different villages where the waters are being used for irrigation. The water samples were analyzed for various chemical propertieslike EC, pH, major cations Na+, Ca++, Mg++, and K+ and anions CO - -, HCO3 -, Cl- and SO - -. Subsequently, residual sodium carbonate (RSC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and adjusted SAR were also calculated. The RSC and SAR values varied from 0 to 2.33 me L-1 and 4.76 to 14.29, respectively. Soluble sodium percentage ranged from 59.25 to 81.18. The quality of irrigation water was categorized on the basis of salinity (EC), sodicity (SAR) and alkalinity (RSC) into four classes viz. good, marginally saline, saline, and highly alkali. The results showed that 35.48 per cent water samples were good, 12.90 per cent marginally saline, 2.23 per cent saline and 48.39 per cent highly alkali in nature and it was found that most of the irrigation water fall under either good or highly alkali categories and only 15% were marginal saline and saline categories.
