A study was undertaken during 2000-2003 to know the different sources of irrigation and to assess the quality of irrigation water in rice (Oryza sativa L.)-wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol) system in areas of different agroclirnatic zones of Trans Gangetic Plain Region covering Wlnjab and Haryana. The water samples were collected from fanners' fields on the basis of multi-stage statistical approach in selected villages and blocks within the respective district in the zone. The quality of irrigation water in Foot Hills of Shiwaliks in both Punjab as well as Haryana is good as electrical conductivity, residual sodium carbonate and chloride ion concentration are under low category. In Mid and Arid Plains Zones the quality of irrigation water is saline to marginal alkali and saline to moderately alkaline in nature respectively. The productivity of these sub plain zones could be increased further by treatment of irrigation water with gypsum application.
