An experiment was conducted during 2002-03 rainy (khurtf) season to screen 19 soybean [Ghcitie nzau (L.) Merr.] lines for resistance against stem fly (Melanugronlyza sojae Zehntn.), Bihar hairy caterpillar (Spilaretia obliqua Walk.) and tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura Fab.). On the basis of two years data on per cent stem tunneling by stem fly, 10 lines were found to be resistant. Three lines, viz 'MAUS 30', 'PK 1347' and 'NRC 59' were resistant to Bihar hairy caterpillar. None of the lines were resistant to tobacco caterpillar. However 10 lines showed moderate resistance against this pest. 'NRC 5 1 ' and 'NRC 52' were highly resistant to stem fly and moderately resistant to Bihar hairy caterpillar and tobacco caterpillar.
