Abstract

The study was conducted on six healthy fresh lungs of goat to observe the branching pattern of lower respiratory tract.  The silicone was injected into lungs through trachea till it goes into the peripheral part. The lungs were hanged by a thread with high tensile strength for 24 hours to settle down the silicone and thereafter dipped in concentrated HCL for digestion. After complete digestion, casts were taken out of acid and washed thoroughly in running tap water. After drying, these corrosion casts were observed for the branching pattern supplying different lobes. The results revealed that right apical lobe was supplied by tracheal bronchus which arose from trachea before its bifurcation. The tracheal bronchus divided into lateral and medial branches immediately after its origin. Trachea after giving right tracheal bronchus continued caudally and divided into right and left principal bronchi. Right principal bronchus gave off accessory bronchus medially to supply intermediate lobe, middle bronchus laterally for cardiac lobe and continued as right caudal bronchus for diaphragmatic lobe. The left principal bronchus gave rise to left cranial lobar bronchus from lateral surface to supply the left apical lobe and continued as left caudal bronchus caudally for diaphragmatic lobe. Immediately after origin, left cranial lobar bronchus divided into lateral and medial branches to apico-cranial and apico-caudal lobes respectively. The ramification of bronchial tree showed that the tracheal bronchus gave four branches to right apical lobe, whereas the right and left principal bronchii were divided into 16 and 17 branches respectively. The three dimensional lung casts are very easy to handle, flexible and formalin free specimens which can be used as a museum specimen and teaching aid for better understanding of different branches supplying the various lung lobes in goat. These can also be used by the clinicians for diagnosis of pulmonary anomalies.
