Abstract

India has the largest bovine population, and ocular tumours can cause significant discomfort and visual impairment in affected animals. This study evaluated the efficacy of a Carbon dioxide laser for the resection of bovine ocular tumours. The objectives were to compare continuous and SuperPulsed laser modes, assess associated thermal tissue damage, and examine the histopathological characteristics of excised tumours. A total of 17 bovines presenting with ocular tumours ≤65 mm in diameter were included, comprising 34 tumours: 8 in the left eye (6 animals), 5 in the right eye (5 animals), and 21 in both eyes (6 animals). Most tumours were well demarcated (22), while 12 showed a spreading nature, with sizes ranging from 8 to 65 mm. All animals were sedated with xylazine hydrochloride (0.1 mg/kg, IM), and anaesthesia was induced and maintained using a guaifenesin–ketamine double drip. Animals were divided into two groups: Group I (n=9) underwent tumour excision using CO₂ laser in continuous mode (4–10 W), while Group II (n=8) underwent excision using SuperPulsed mode (4–8 W, 50% duty cycle). Mean power output and surgical time were higher in Group I. Physiological parameters and STT-I values remained within normal limits in both groups, and the fluorescein dye test was negative except in one animal in Group II. Histopathological examination confirmed dermoids (26), ocular squamous cell carcinoma (5), lacrimal gland hyperplasia (2), and papilloma (1). All surgical margins were tumour-free, with significantly lower thermal damage observed in the SuperPulsed mode. Complete recovery was achieved in all animals, with recurrence noted only in two cases in Group I. The findings indicate that SuperPulsed CO₂ laser is a safer and more precise modality for resecting bovine ocular tumours.
