Uterine rupture during whelping can occur when uterine wall is compromised by infections, dead foetus, uterine torsion or careless obstetrical procedures. A 1½ year old female Labrador dog was presented with distended abdomen with a history of breeding 67 days back. Transabdominal palpation, abdominal walls were held tight, elicited pain on palpation and hard structures suggestive of foetuses were palpable. On trans-abdominal ultrasonography revealed fetuses without any heart beat. Haematology revealed anaemia with leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia in the animal. The left uterine horn was necrosed, the right uterine horn and uterine body were highly congested with a longitudinal tear on the dorsal surface. Since the uterine damage was irreparable, en-bloc surgery was performed. The peritoneum and mesentery were highly congested indicating septic peritonitis. Animal was treated parenterally with antibiotics, analgesics, plasma volume expanders and intravenous fluids. The sutures were removed on the 10th post operative day and the animal had an uneventful recovery.
