Indian agriculture has made significant progress in achieving self-sufficiency in food grain production and has attained a growth rate sufficient to meet the demands of the growing population. Since pulses are a major source of protein in the Indian diet, as well as resource conserving
and environmentally friendly, enhancing their production can help address challenges such as nutritional security and reduction of dependence on imports.
