Abstract
The lesser known cereals (millets) are suitable for hilly conditions with minimum external inputs in a fragile ecosystem. The new variety of barnyard millet PRJ-1, became popular among farmers of northwestern Himalayan region of Pauri district in Uttarakhand, because of the technological interventions of GBPUAT Hill Campus, Ranichauri. The variety was made available to farmers through 30 demonstrations in nearby villages. The farmers could get a yield of 20.20 q/ha in comparison to 9.10 q/ha of the local variety. Since then the demand for seed of this variety has grown and it has become popular among farmers.Downloads
