Abstract

Data on growth, wool yield and milk yield of Jaisalmeri sheep maintained under farmers' flocks in its native tract were recorded and analyzed for performance evaluation. In breeding tract of Jaisalmeri sheep, more than 80% farmer's family members were illiterate. Average weight of adult rams was 43.28±0.30 kg and of ewes 32.05±0.16 kg. Location significantly affected body height, paunch girth, eye length and ear length in all the age groups, while for other traits an erratic trend was noticed. The least squares means of body weight at weaning and hogget's stage were 14.89±0.11 and 22.91±0.18 kg, respectively. Location significantly affected body weights at all the ages. The wool yield of animal was higher in September-October clip (1018 g) followed by that in March (728 g) and was lowest in July (618 g). The wool quality parameters indicated that wool of Jaisalmeri sheep is suitable for carpet preparation. The week of lactation significantly affected daily milk yield. The overall performance of Jaisalmeri in farmers' flock was found satisfactory under prevailing harsh climatic conditions of arid region and breed has good potential for growth and wool production.
