Abstract

Strains (24) of Salmonella typhimurium isolated from diarrhoeic calves were screened for the presence of mannose sensitive or/and mannose-resistant fimbriae by haemagglutination test, using erythrocytes of camel, turkey, poultry, guinea pig and ox. Tryptic soy broth favoured optimal expression of MS fimbriae of S typhimurum incubated at 37°C for 72 hr, followed by 3 similar passages. The erythrocytes of camel and turkey were most suitable for conducting haemagglutination test. Majority of S. typhimurum strains (62.50%) tested, showed MS-HA. For selection of highly fimbriate strain one of the 12 strains of S typhimurium yielded highest titre of 1: 512 With the erythroytes of turkey. Seventeen of the strains tested produced pellicle (70.72%).
