Albino mice (36) 6 to 8 week old and 15-20g weight were each infected with 200 cercariae of Schistosoma incognitum and were allotted randomly to 6 groups of equal number keeping the 2 groups as infected, untreated controls. Rafoxanide and CDRI compound 81-470 [methyl (5-( 4-(2-pyridinyl)-piprazinyl carbonyl)-I H benzimidazole-Z-yl) carbamate] were tried both on immature (20 days post-infection) and mature (60 DPI) schistosome infections along with their effect on egg load, granuloma number in the liver and viability of the eggs. No significant reduction either in fluke load, or egg/granuloma number or in viability of the eggs could be observed in any group. No, or little effect of these drugs on Schistosoma infections warrants continuous search for an effective drug against Indian schistosomes.
