Abstract

Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) on the chromosomes of Madras Red sheep were studied using short-term lymphocyte culture. The chromosomes were stained with silver-Giemsa staining technique using gelatin colloidal developer. The NORs of the domestic sheep were located on the telomeric ends of chromosomes 1 (1p), 2 (2q), 3 (3q), 4 and 25. The mean number of NORs per metaphase spread were 6.48 ± 0.13. Within individual variations were also observed in the expression of NORs. In some cells, NORs were observed in both the chromosomes of NOR-positive pair, in some of them only 1 of the 2 chromosomes showed NORs while in few, both the homologous pair of chromosomes were not silver-stained.
