Oestradiol- 17ß and progesterone concentrations were determined in individual follicles from buffalo ovaries obtained from an abattoir. The follicular diameter was measured and the follicles were classified as small (3 to 5 mm diameter), medium (6 to 9 mm diameter) and large (10 mm and above in diameter). The follicles with oestradiol-17ß progesterone molar ratios of >1.00 were considered to be oestrogen-active, and the rest were considered to be oestrogen-inactive/ atretic. Oestrogen-inactive/atretic follicles were found to be 182/197 (92%). Among the oestrogen-inactive/atretic follicles, the concentrations of oestradiol-  17ß were significantly higher in large compared to those in medium and small follicles, with the differences among follicles of different size categories being nonsignificant in oestrogen-active follicles. The progesterone concentrations were not significantly different among small-medium-and large-sized follicles in oestrogen inactive/atretic as well as oestrogen-active follicles. The molar ratios of oestradiol-17 ß/progesterone were not significantly different among the 3 -sized categories of oestrogen-inactive/atretic follicles. These were, however, significantly higher (P<0.05) in large compared to those ill medium and small follicles in the oestrogen-active category.Downloads
