India has made substantial progress in the field of animal virology in the 50 years after its independence. An attempt has been made here to present an overview of selected advances. While doing so, the stress has been laid on developments which had or have a direct impact on the epidemiology, diagnosis and prevention of animal virus diseases leading to control or eradication.
