Abstract

Ontogeny of indifferent gonad was recorded in 24 Surti buffalo embryos from day 35 to 57 (1.5 to 6.4 cm CVR) of intra-uterine life. The primordial germ cells (PGCs) appeared on the mesentary at day 35 (1.5 cm CVR) and in the gonadal ridge at day 36 (1.7 em CVR) of gestation. The gonadal ridge was evident along the ventromedial border of mesonephros in day 36 embryo. The gonadal primordium was covered by simple cuboidal mesothelium in day 39 (2.3 cm CVR) embryo. The formation of spindle-shaped indifferent gonad was recorded on the ventromedial aspect of mesonephros at day 47 (4.1 cm CVR) of gestation. A single layer of flat epithelium covered the indifferent gonad in day 51 (5.0 cm CVR) embryo. Reticular fibres appeared in the gonadai mass in day 41 (2.8 cm CVR) embryo. It was concluded that the gonadal development followed migration of PGCs.
