The karyotype and C- banding of the Indian major carp, Catla catla were reported 2N =50 with 6 metacentric, 16 sub metacentric and 28 subtelocentric and telocentric chromosomes. Colchicine-hypotonic-fixation technique was followed to prepare metaphase chromosome plate. The C- banding pattern revealed darkly stained blocks of constitutive heterochromatin in the centromeric and telomeric region of the chromosome.
